Backstage with En Vogue
Long before I photographed families, professionals and personal branding clients, I was standing at the edge of stages with a camera in hand. Band photography was where I started. It taught me to work fast, read light that changed by the second and capture a genuine moment before it disappeared. Around 2012 that path led me backstage in Charlotte, North Carolina, where I had the chance to photograph Cindy Herron of En Vogue.
Backstage passes give you access to the closest places for images. There are no flash or studio lights, no controlled backdrops and very little time. What you get instead is a performer in a rare in between moment, still in the moment of the show. Photographing Cindy in that setting was a reminder that the best portraits are not built, they are noticed. My job was simply to be ready when the real expression arrived, and with someone who has spent decades in front of audiences and cameras, that readiness mattered.
Those years shooting musicians shaped the photographer I am now. Every portrait session I run today, whether in Basingstoke or on location, draws on the same instincts: anticipate the moment, keep the atmosphere easy and let the person be themselves. The gear has changed and the settings are calmer, but the goal is identical to that night in Charlotte. Find the genuine moment, and press the shutter.
The best portraits are not built, they are noticed. You simply have to be ready when the real expression arrives.
